The Lottery and Lottie Moon

A normal Wednesday morning includes going to eat Breakfast with some men from my church.  On the way there, the talk on the radio was all about the Powerball jackpot.  Later, I pulled up CNN on my computer and the main story was about the Powerball jackpot.  The Lottery gets a lot of attention because many are hoping for a golden ticket to riches and retirement.  However, it’s been noted that many who have won the lottery went on to live terrible lives or were even murdered afterwards.  Many dream of happiness and awake to misery.  CNN points out that the odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are actually quite slim.  During college, statistics fascinated me.  So, here are a few to ponder during your week and perhaps reality will set in.  The chance of a ticket winning a Powerball jackpot is 1 in 175,223,510.  By comparison, it is more likely to hit a deer while traveling in Hawaii (1 in 6,267) or to die from a bee sting (1 in 6.1 million) or to hit a hole in one on consecutive par-3 holes (1 in about 156 million).  But besides the odds not being in your favor, why else should we       not play the Lottery?

Hershael York has described gambling well in saying, “Gambling wreaks havoc upon families and it is a desire to want something for nothing.”  Gambling is false entertainment that robs from the poor while offering a false hope for the hurting.  In an age of materialism, our desires are out of control and they reveal our hearts of greed and selfishness.  Henry Ford described money and men well when he said, “Money doesn’t change men, it merely unmasks them.”

While people are looking for temporary happiness and hope for the future, the Bible is clear in saying these can be found not in following our fleshly desires but in forsaking all by following Jesus Christ.  He alone can bring hope to our souls.  He might not bring fame and money but he can set us free from our greed while meeting our greatest need.  Jesus didn’t share a prosperity gospel but he did deliver a grace-filled gospel with clarity.  In the book of Matthew, Jesus said, “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it.  What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul?”

As Christians, we must examine our hearts and see where our treasure is.  As a church, we get to give generously this time of year to our annual Lottie Moon Christmas Offering.    As we give, be encouraged that 100% goes directly to the missionaries as they make disciples who follow Christ all around the world.  Instead of giving to a lottery that promotes greed, give to Lottie Moon that promotes the gospel.

Here is a fascinating little blog post about an easy way to learn about Christian History.  Timothy Paul Jones is an instructor at Southern Seminary and he does us a great service by teaching about Christian History through videos.  If you have some spare time, you will enjoy these lessons that will guide our faith. Good Books from a Good Source -- Gospel eBooks

I love to read.  I didn't use to love to read but God has changed that desire.  The only problem now is that I need to carve out more time to read and need more money to buy quality books.  Well, I can fix one of those problems now.  Gospel eBooks offers quality Christian books at a low cost.  Check out their website here.

I'm thankful for the opportunity to hear from two men who love the LORD God and seek to do his will in all things.  Adam Dorsey and Scott Tyler will be preaching at our revival services.  You will not want to miss the messages they bring as they proclaim Jesus Christ, the Supreme Savior.  We will also have some guest musicians as well. Will you not revive us again, that your people may rejoice in you?  Show us your unfailing love, O Lord, and grant us your salvation.  -- Psalm 85:6-7

The Importance of the Church

The Church is not an institution that you go to so you can pay your respects to God.  The church is God's instrument to proclaim His glory to their respective community and across the world.  There are many important passages in the Bible which describe the importance of the church.  Here are just a few: Acts 2:42-47

42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts,47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

Hebrews 10:21-25

21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. 25 Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

Ephesians 1:22-23

22 And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, 23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.

Ephesians 2:19-22

19 Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and aliens, but fellow citizens with God’s people and members of God’s household,20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. 21 In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. 22 And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.

Other important passages include:

  • Matthew 16:15-19; 18:15-20, Ephesians 3:8-11,21; 5:22-32, and 1 Timothy 3:1-15
The church is a body of people called by God’s grace through faith in Christ. -- David Platt
